For most of us, Hawaii begins to weave her spell(魅力)with some little glimmer(微光) of awareness. Golden beaches and golden people. Sun, sand, sea, and surf……And somewhere between the blue skies and the palm trees(棕榈树)……we're hooked(吸引).
The Hawaiian Islands are one of the most beautiful places on earth. The weather is friendly. The temperature ranges(在一定范围内变化)from 60-90 degrees all year long. It's a little warmer in summer, and a little cooler in winter, but every day is a beach day for somebody.
There are no strangers in Paradise. Perhaps the most beautiful part of Hawaii is the genuine(与生俱来的)warmth of people. We call it the spirit of Aloha(爱). It has allowed a melting pot(熔炉)of cultures from all over the world to find common ground(共同点), and a new home, in this most gentle of places.
  1.hook
He was surprised to see hookers move into the next apartment.
  (2)hook, line and sinker
I warned Sally not to believe that man's stories about how rich he was, but she swallowed them hook, line and sinker. After she married him, she found out he owed money to everbody in his office.
Hey! Since you're a friend of Bill's, why don't you hook me up?
  2.Aloha
  all day/night long
An idle young man finds fun in seeking casual joy and love all day long.
He didn't sleep a wink last night because he kept cough all night long.

The Pyramids,Egypt

Built 4,000 years ago, the three great pyramids at Giza, in the Egyptian desert remain the most colossal1 buildings ever constructed. The pyramids were built by Egyptians under the orders of the Egyptian leader, whose title was Pharaoh2. There was a sequence of Pharaohs culminating3 around 2615 B.C., with the Pharaoh Cheops who built the biggest thing ever built, the Great Pyramid, also known as Khufu. Cheops built a pyramid 770 feet on one side and 481 feet tall. How ancient builders managed to build these massive structures has never been fully answered but the effort clearly required brains and brawn4. Was there engineering genius involved? Yes, there was. For example, when you're putting the block right at the top, how are you going to lug5 a block of stone that weighs several tons 480 feet up a structure? How are you going to do it, and how are you going to do it without leaving scratches6 on all the rest of the structure? And how many people does it take to drag a block weighing several tons 480 feet up into the sky? Approximately, 2.3 million blocks of stone were cut, transported and assembled to create the Great Pyramid. The Pharaohs may have set out to build magnificent tombs for themselves, but in the end they created monuments to human potential. There's a universal message in the pyramids. The pyramids belong to Egypt, but the pyramids also belong to the world. That's why we can all identify the pyramids as an early monument of human greatness.

If You Forget Me 如果你忘了我

By Pablo Neruda
I want you to know one thing You know how this is 这是我的想法
If I look at the crystal moon
at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window
If I touch near the fire
or the wrinkled body of the log
Everything carries me to you 我的心儿就会飞向你
As if everything that exists
Aromas, light, medals,
Or little boats that sail toward
those isles of your that wait for me, 那里, 你等候着我
Well now. If little by little 然而,假若
You stop loving me, 你对我的爱情淡去
I shall stop loving you 我的爱火也会
Little by little.
If suddenly you forget me 如果瞬间你忘了我
Do not look for me 别来找我,
For I shall already have forgotten you.
If you think it long and mad
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
And you decide to leave me 而决意离我而去
at the shore of the heart where I have roots,
Remember, that on that day, at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
And my roots will set off 摇断爱的根脉,
to seek another land.
But, if each day, each hour,
You feel that you are destined for me
If each day a flower climbs
up to your lips to seek me, 每天绽若鲜花
Ah my love, ah my own, 啊,我的爱人, 我心里
in me all that fire is repeated,
In me nothing is extinguished or forgotten
My love feeds on your love, beloved,
And as long as you live
it will be in your arms without leaving mine.

In a class I teach for adults, I recently did the “unpardonable.”
  I gave the class homework!
The assignment was to “go to someone you love within the next week and tell them you love them.
It has to be someone you have never said those words to before
or at least haven''t shared those words with for a long time.”
Now that doesn t sound like a very tough assignment, until you stop to realize that most of the men were over 35
and were raised in the generation of men that were taught that expressing emotions is not “macho.”
Showing feelings or crying (heaven forbid!) was just not done.
So this was a very threatening assignment for some.
At the beginning of our next class,
I asked if someone wanted to share what happened when they told someone they loved them.
I fully expected one of the women to volunteer6, as was usually the case,
but on this evening one of the men raised his hand.
He appeared quite moved and a bit shaken.
As he unfolded out of his chair(all 6 2" of him),
he began by saying, Dennis, I was quite angry with you last week when you gave us this assignment.
I didn`t feel that I had anyone to say those words to, and besides,
who were you to tell me to do something that personal8?
“But as I began driving home my conscience started talking to me.
It was telling me that I knew exactly who I needed to say I love you to.
You see, five years ago, my father and I had a vicious disagreement and really never resolved it since that time.
We avoided seeing each other unless we absolutely had to at Christmas or other family gatherings.
But even then, we hardly spoke to each other.
“So last Tuesday by the time I got home I had convinced myself I was going to tell my father I loved him.
“It’s weird, but just making that decision seemed to lift a heavy load off my chest.
“When I got home, I rushed into the house to tell my wife what I was going to do. She was already in bed, but I woke her up anyway. When I told her, she didn’t just get out of bed, she catapulted out and hugged my, and for the first time in our married life she saw me cry. We stayed up half the night drinking coffee and talking. It was great!
“The next morning I was up bright and early. I was so excited I could hardly sleep. I got to the office early and accomplished more in two hours than I had the whole day before.
“At 9:00 I called my dad to see if could come over after work. When he answered the phone, I just said, ‘Dad, can I come over after work tonight? I have something to tell you.’ My dad responded with a grumpy, ‘Now what?’ I assured him it wouldn’t take long, so he finally agreed.
“At 5:30, I was at my parents’ house ringing the doorbell, praying that Dad would answer the door. I was afraid if Mom answered that I would chicken out and tell her instead. But as luck would have it, Dad did answer the door.
“I didn’t waste any time – I took one step in the door and said, ‘Dad, I just came over to tell you that I love you.’
“It was as if a transformation came over my dad. Before my eyes his face softened, the wrinkles seemed to disappear and he began to cry. He reached out and hugged me and said, ‘I love you too, son, but I’ve never been able to say it.’
“It was such a precious moment I didn’t want to move. Mom walked by with tears in her eyes. I just waved and blew her a kiss. Dad and I hugged for a moment longer and then I left. I hadn’t felt that great in a long time.
“But that’s not even my point. Two days after that visit, my dad, who had heart problems, but didn’t tell me, had an attack and ended up in the hospital, unconscious. I don’t know if he'll make it.
“So my message to all of you in this is: Don’t wait to do the things you know need to be done. What if I had waited to tell my dad – maybe I will never get the chance again! Take the time to do what you need to do and do it now!”

A Box Full Of Kisses -

Once upon a time, a man punished his 5-year-old daughter for using up the family's only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. Money was tight, and he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve, he saw that the child had pasted the gold paper so as to decorate a shoebox to put under the Christmas tree.
Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!"
As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction.
But when he opened it, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady,” he said harshly, “when you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside the package!"
The little girl looked up at him with tears rolling from her eyes and said: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full."
The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger.
An accident took the life of the child only a short time later. It is told that the father kept that little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there.
In a very real sense, each of us as human beings have been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God.
There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.

The gift of Love-爱的颂歌

If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I thought like a child; when I became and adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.
Do you have such kind of experience? In a bus you may look at stranger, but not too long. And if he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.
The same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down, to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward other’s stare with you that way. Eyes do speak, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different when it comes to stare at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to avert his gaze, his intentions are obvious, that is, he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he is admiring her.
However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking, to tell him that he is attentive.
If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to dominate you, you will feel disconcerted. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim, since he believes in the false idea that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication. Quite the contrary.
In fact, continuous eye contact is confined to lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time, to show affection that words cannot express.
Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the specific situation.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.
An individual human existence should be like a river—small at first, narrowly contained within its banks, and rushing passionately past boulders and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity,of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Scientists found new evidence of water on moon

Tiny green and orange glass balls brought back from the moon nearly 40 years ago by astronauts show evidence that water existed there from the very beginning, scientists reported on Wednesday.

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints; we spend more, but have less; we buy more but enjoy less.
We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time; we have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness.

Do Only Children Need Setback Experience? Some people think that only children needn't setback experience, is trmes have changed, only children should not be subjected to strict demands. In their eyes, experiencing setback makes these sensitive children feel being underdogs (战败者). Therefore, letting down only children spiritually is harmful to their psychological wellWeing(心理健康). However, some people hold opposite opinions. They claim that setback experience is beneficial to only children. It encourages children to practice their skills and ability and work on their weak points, and fulfill its goal of getting them used to real and competitive society. Going through some setback may contribute to the shape of their personal character in the future. In my opinion, setback experience should be urgently advocated (倡导). Setback experience acquires new meaning in today's era (时代) of change. The road to success starts from the beginning, and our world is one full of competitions, If only children have never had any setback, in the long run they won't bear any setback or failure in life. Some setback early on may make them ready for very challenging issues at a later date.

Teacher Ants Show Students the Way to Food

Ants have a myriad of complex social behaviors despite possessing only teeny brains. Now new research suggests that teaching should be added to the list of ant accomplishments.
Nigel Franks and Tom Richardson of the University of Bristol in England studied so-called tandem running in Temnothorax albipennis ants, during which two ants run a course between nest and food with various stops and starts en route. The researchers found that the lead ant who knows the way to the food slows down as the follower familiarizes itself with the route and will not proceed until the follower taps it on the back. The two also maintain a variable but matching speed and distance over time.
"This behavior is beautifully simple," Richardson says. "If one experimentally removes the follower and taps the leader with a hair at a rate of two times per second or more, the leader will continue."
Biologists have a definition of a teacher in the world of animals: any individual who sacrifices some potential gain in order to educate a naïve counterpart. In a report published today in Nature Franks and Richardson argue that true teaching also requires feedback between the teacher and the student. The ant duos qualify on both counts. "The teacher provides information or guidance to the pupil at a rate suited to the pupil's abilities and the pupil signals to the teacher when parts of the 'lesson' have been assimilated and that the lesson may continue," Franks notes. "True teaching always involves feedback in both directions."
In the case of the ants, the teachers sacrificed their own speed, as evidenced by the observation that they reached the food source four times more quickly on their own than when they had a student in tow. But the students found food more than a minute faster with the help of teaching and then often themselves became teachers for other ants. Sometimes, however, knowledge of a food source needs to be communicated faster than one-on-one training can accomplish. In those situations, large ant groups often broadcast such information through pheromone trails or other means. But tandem running proves that teaching may develop even in organisms that lack large brains, providing help for pupils with the tiniest of intellects. --David Biello

Whales

Whales
The concern throughout the world in 1988 for those three whales that were locked in the Arctic ice was dramatic proof that whales, several species of which face extinction, have become subjects of considerable sympathy.1988年,3头巨鲸被封在北极圈的冰块之中使全世界深感关切。 These are the recorded voices of whales. These monstrous creatures have been trumpeting their songs, one to another, in the world's oceans since the dawn of time, while overhead, great empires and civilizations have come and gone. Now, their time of decline has come. It began a long time ago. Four-thousand-year-old rock carvings show that the people who lived in what is now Norway were probably the first to seek out and kill whales in the sea. By around 890 AD, 3,000 years later, the practice had spread to the Basque people of France and Spain, who hunted whales from boats in the Bay of Biscay. In the centuries that followed, Whaling became an important industry in Denmark, England, Germany, the Netherlands, and, finally, in what would become America.4千年前的岩雕表明,住在现今挪威这个地方的人大概是最早在海上捕杀鲸鱼的人。 Whaling went into dramatic decline, beginning around 1900. Today, whales are hunted commercially only by Norway, Iceland and Japan. The world's fascination with them, however, is at an all-time high, because so few of them are left. Given their tragic history. Richard Ellis writes about whales, takes pictures of whales in the open sea, and sketches whales stranded on the beach. He says it's a 20-year obsession that began in the mid-1960s, when he designed a model of a great blue for the Museum of Natural History in New York. As I began to do the research. I realized that nobody knew anything about whales. And I couldn't really find any pictures of what they looked like: all I could find was pictures of dead whales. And I became very excited at the prospect of doing what seemed to be original research on something that was so peculiar, which was the largest animal that has ever lived on earth. So large, he discovered, that the largest dinosaur weighed only half as much as the female blue whale. As he continued his research he boarded scientific vessels. Dove with whales in the Pacific, and even watched whales die at the hands of modern. explosive-tipped harpoons. His sketches appeared in magazines and encyclopedias and at the center of what was then the beginning of a movement to save the whales. I was one of those people who used to stand on street corners and ask for people to sign petitions, which at that time were directed towards the Japanese and the Soviets. Because in that period of time - late 60s, early 70s – the Japanese and the Soviets were killing tens of thousands of sperm particularly in the North Pacific. And we thought that getting the world's opinion on paper would make them say, 'Oh look, all these people don't like what we are doing. We will stop.' Well, of course, they didn't stop"“我是那个时候常常站在街角征集人们在请愿书上签名的人之一,当时的请愿书是针对日本人和苏联人而写的。 Not at first, Commercial whaling peaked in the mid-1960s, with more than 60,000 whales killed each year. The International Whaling Commission, a group of member nations aimed at regulating the industry, began to make recommendations to end commercial whaling entirely. Why kill whales for soap, or fuel or paints and vernishes, even margarine, if we had substitutes for all those products? The seemingly senseless slaughter focused the world's attention on the whale and consequently the International whaling Commission or IWC. And since it's said nowhere in the constitution of the IWC that you had to be whaling nation to join you have countries like Kenya and the Seychelles. Switzerland is a member of the IWC, a country not known for its whaling history. Countries joined because they felt that this was something that needed to be done. By 1986, the Commission had passed a moratoriunm on commercial whaling. But since the organization had no enforcement powers, it could and can not impose sanctions on violators. Only a few nations-Japan. Iceland, and Norway-continue to hunt whales commercially. Richard Ellis says there is something magical about this animal caught in the net of life and time. and we must continue to fight to preserve it, because in the end we are really protecting a small part of ourselves and our earth.

It is the job of the most mature worker bees to leave the hive to collect nectar from flowers. Upon returning to the hive, they deposit the nectar into pockets, called honeycombs, in the hive’s walls. It is from here that we get honey.
But before you go putting your hand into a beehive, remember this: The hive is the center of the bees’world. It is not only where they store the products of their hard work, but also where they raise their young. The hive is, therefore, so important that every worker is willing to lay down its life to protect it, should its safety be threatened. A group of worker bees can kill an animal--or even a person--with their stings.
This defense, however, comes at a high price. Soon after stinging its victim, a honeybee will die. These little soldiers make this sacrifice without a second thought, as they are driven by instinct alone. So remember, when you are near a beehive, you can’t“bee”careful enough!

The origin of dollar

The origin of the almighty dollar is in what is now the Czech Republic. In 1519, a silver mine near the town of Joachimstal (literally "Joachim's valley," from the German Tal, meaning valley) began minting a silver coin called, unimaginatively, the Joachimstaler. The coin, which was circulated widely, became better known by its clipped form, the taler. In Dutch and Low German, the initial consonant softened to become daler. English adopted this form, eventually changing its spelling to the modern dollar.
In the American colonies, there was no standard currency. The coin that was in widest use was the Spanish Peso, known also as "Pieces of Eight" because it could be divided into eight pie-like pieces. The English colonists informally assigned the name dollar to this coin. In 1785, when the Continental Congress established U.S. currency, they adopted dollar as name for the standard unit of currency, at the suggestion of Governeur Morris and Thomas Jefferson, because the term was widely known and was not associated with any form of official English currency. (Jefferson also coined the term disme, from the French dixieme, for a tenth of a dollar. Pronounced deem, it eventually became dime.)
The origin of the $ sign has several folkloric stories attached. One says that Thomas Jefferson invented it, perhaps as a sort of monogram for TS. Jefferson was the first to use the symbol in relation to the U.S. dollar, but this story is fanciful. Another says that originally it was U superimposed over an S, for U.S. of course. Eventually the base of the U eroded due to poor printing technology, leaving an S with two lines through it. Another says that it is a variant of a figure eight that appeared on the Spanish Peso, standing for the pieces of eight. This last is close to the truth, but not quite there.
The Spanish royal family used on its escutcheon, two pillars (representing the Pillars of Hercules in Gibraltar and Morocco) crossed by an unfurled banner reading "Plus Ultra." This symbol appeared on the Peso, and looked much like the modern $ sign. It was adopted as a symbol for the Peso in the American colonies, and was transferred to the dollar.
The U.S. was the first nation to adopt an official currency named the dollar. In 1797, the Bank of England began minting "dollar" coins as bank-issued currency. Other nations that have adopted the name dollar for their currency have done so in emulation of either the U.S. or this short-lived Bank of England practice.

The History of Coffee

The history and development of the beverage that we know as coffee is varied and interesting, involving chance occurrences, political intrigue, and the pursuit of wealth and power. According to one story, a sheepherder named Kaldi as he tended his sheep noticed the effect of coffee beans on behavior. He noticed that the sheep became hyperactive after eating the red "cherries" from a certain plant when they changed pastures. He tried a few themselves, and was soon as overactive as his herd. The story relates that a monk happened by and scolded him for "partaking of the devil's fruit." However the monks soon discovered that this fruit from the shiny green plant could help them stay awake for their prayers. Another legend gives us the name for coffee or "mocha." An Arabian was banished to the desert with his followers to die of starvation. In desperation, Omar had his friends boil and eat the fruit from an unknown plant. Not only did the broth save the exiles, but the residents of the nearest town, Mocha, took their survival as a religious sign. The plant and its beverage were named Mocha to honor this event. One early use for coffee would have little appeal today. The Galla tribe from Ethiopia used coffee, but not as a drink. They would wrap the beans in animal fat as their only source of nutrition while on raiding parties. The Turks were the first countries to adopt it as a drink, often adding spices such as clove, cinnamon, cardamom and anise to the brew. Coffee was introduced much later to countries beyond Arabia whose inhabitants believed it to be a delicacy and guarded its secret as if they were top secret military plans. The government forbade transportation of the plant out of the Moslem nations. The actual spread of coffee was started illegally. One Arab named Baba Budan smuggled beans to some mountains near Mysore, India, and started a farm there. Early in this century, the descendants of those original plants were found still growing fruitfully in the region. Coffee was believed by some Christians to be the devil's drink. Pope Vincent III heard this and decided to taste it before he banished it. He enjoyed it so much and baptized it, saying, "coffee is so delicious it would be a pity to let the infidels have exclusive use of it."Coffee today is grown and enjoyed worldwide, and is one of the few crops that small farmers in third-world countries can profitably export.

We are looking for a competent person to fill the captioned position:
University graduate majors in Marketing Management. Prepared to develop career in the commercial field
  -outgoing personality
-Able to communicate with different levels
  -Good knowledge in PC operations
-University graduate with major in Marketing
-Having actively participated in Business club’s activities and learned accounting and management
-Good in communication with people and like a lot of out door activities know how to tackle with people from all walks of life
  -Skillful in operating Words Excel Lotus1-2-3etc
  1996/7-1996/8 General Clerk IBM
1995/7-1995/8 Account clerks Manley Toy Trading
  1994/6-1994/8 Salesgirl Esprit.
Three years of job experience in different positions have offered me opportunities to understand different job aspects.
-As a General ClerkIBMAccounts clerk Manley Toy TradingI have learned how to prepare purchasing orders place orders handle accounting mastery check voucher……alsoSalesgirl Espritdeveloping the technique of selling serving and stocking.
Job Objective
Job objective To begin as a Marketing Management Trainee with opportunity to advance to executive level and contribute to the development of firm.
Cover letter
Resume

Secret For a Long Life

A woman walks up to a little old man rocking in a chair on his porch.
"I couldn't help noticing how happy you look," she says. "What's your secret for a long, happy life?"
"I smoke three packs a day, drink a case of whiskey a week, eat fatty foods and never, ever exercise."
"Wow, that's amazing," says the woman. "How old are you?"
"Twenty-six."

Low-salt, low-protein diet can prevent kidney stones

A diet low in salt and meat can dramatically reduce the risk of kidney stones, according to an Italian study that could spell the end for the low-calcium diet that doctors have been recommending for years.
About 10% of the U.S. population - and a much larger percentage of men, who make up 80% of sufferers - will have at least one kidney stone sometime in their lives, and it can be excruciatingly painful. Most stones can be excreted, but in about 15% of cases, surgery or shockwave treatment to pulverize the stones is needed.
Many doctors have told such patients to cut down on calcium because most kidney stones are made of a calcium compound. But recent studies have suggested that such a diet might not prevent kidney stones after all and may even promote them - along with osteoporosis.
The new study "dispelled a myth that a low-calcium diet is important in preventing kidney stones," said Dr. David A. Bushinsky, a kidney specialist at the University of Rochester.
William Keane, president of the National Kidney Foundation, said he is sure the new diet "will become the gold standard."
Dr. Umberto Maggiore, explained that people on a low-calcium diet excrete less calcium in their urine but more of the other substance that combines with calcium to form most kidney stones.
In addition, salt and one protein common in meat lead to more calcium in the urine, which in turn contributes to the formation of kidney stones, Bushinsky said.
The low-salt, low-protein diet allowed 2,900 milligrams of salt per day; 2,400 is the maximum recommended by the American Heart Association. But people were allowed only about three-quarters of an ounce of meat per day, with just over an ounce of cheese or other dairy protein.
Umberto Magiore

The American Foundation for Urologic Disease does not mention a low-calcium diet on its Web page about kidney stones, but does say a doctor may suggest a low-meat, low-salt diet. The National Kidney Foundation's Web page says a doctor may suggest either diet, depending on test results.
Health care for kidney stones added up to $1.8 billion in 1993, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Drinking 10 to 12 big glasses of water during the day can keep stones from forming and push out those smaller than a pea.

Cocoa Linked to Lower Risk of Disease

The Dutch have a long history with chocolate. Although native Mexicans and their Spanish conquerors first used the bitter bean--and reported on its tonic powers--a Dutchman was the first to extract modern cocoa and neutralize its bitterness with alkali. The modern chocolate bar was born. Now, results from a study of aging Dutch men have shown that cocoa consumers were half as likely to die from disease than those who did not eat the sweet treat. Brian Buijsse of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in Bilthoven and his colleagues measured the cocoa intake of 470 men between 1985 and 2000 as part of the Zutphen Elderly Study, a longitudinal look at nearly 1,000 Dutch men between 65 and 84 years of age. The nutrition experts identified 24 cocoa-containing foods that the elderly men ate, ranging from dark chocolate bars to chocolate spreads. They summed the total amount of cocoa each consumed and came up with a grams-per-day measurement, which they used to separate the men into three groups: those who ate little chocolate, a modest amount, and the most.

The Manhattan solstice: New York's stunning light show

We have the historic and spectacular beauty of Stonehenge, and in America they have the unique urban phenomenon of ... Manhattanhenge.
Twice a year the sun aligns to bathe the city that never sleeps in glowing light.
As the sun sets over the American city on these special days, streets on the Manhattan grid are illuminated in a way that has been compared to the solstice at Stonehenge.
Every single cross-street is tinged with orange sunlight for the last fifteen minutes of the day.
The term Manhattanhenge was coined in 2002 by Neil deGrasse Tyson, an astrophysicist at the American Museum of Natural History.
It applies to those streets that follow the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 which laid out a grid offset 28.9 degrees from true east-west.
Had they been set directly on the east-west line, the phenomenon would coincide with the spring and autumn equinoxes.
As the sun sets behind the Chrysler Building in New York City it gives the Art Deco skyscraper a golden glow.
The word solstice translates from the Latin word solstitium, which means "stopped sun".
It refers to the winter and summer solstices when the sun reaches its most extreme southern and northern points.

Love and Time

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love.
Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment.
When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.
Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said,
"Richness, can you take me with you?"
Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you."
Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. "Vanity, please help me!"
"I can't help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered.
Sadness was close by so Love asked, "Sadness, let me go with you."
"Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!"
Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her.
Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder. So blessed and overjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way. Realizing how much was owed the elder,
Love asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who Helped me?"
"It was Time," Knowledge answered.
"Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?"
Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how valuable Love is."

All woman born for loving

A little boy asked his mother:"Why are you crying?"
"Because I am a woman."She told him.
"I don't understand"he said.
His mum just hugged him and said:"And you never will."
Later the little boy asked his father:"Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?"
"All woman cry for no reason."Was all his dad could say.
The little boy grow up and became a man, still wondering why women cry.
Finally he put in a call to God, when God got on the phone, he asked,"God, why do women cry so easily?"
God said:"When I made the women, she had to be special. I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world; yet, gentle enough to give comfort.
I gave her inner strength to endure childbirth, and the rejections many times comes from her children.
I gave her hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up, and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complains.
"I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances, even her children has hurt her very badly.
"I gave her strength to carry her husband through his faults and fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart."
"I gave her the wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strength and resolve to stand beside him unfalteringly."
"And finally, I gave her a tear to shed. That is her exclusively to use whenever it is needed."
"You see the beauty of a women is not the clothes she wears, the figure she carries, or the way she combs her hair."
"The beauty of a women must be seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where the love resides."

the true meaning of love - will never regret it

Time is running out for my friend. While we are sitting at lunch she casually mentions she and her husband are thinking of starting a family. "We're taking a survey,"she says, half-joking. "Do you think I should have a baby?"
"It will change your life," I say, carefully keeping my tone neutral. "I know,"she says, "no more sleeping in on weekends, no more spontaneous holidays..."
But that's not what I mean at all. I look at my friend, trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes. I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will be vulnerable forever.
I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper without thinking: "What if that had been MY child?" That every plane crash, every house fire will haunt her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die. I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level of a bear protecting her cub.
I feel I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might arrange for child care, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting, and she will think her baby's sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her child is all right.
I want my friend to know that every decision will no longer be routine. That a five-year-old boy's desire to go to the men's room rather than the women's at a restaurant will become a major dilemma. The issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in the lavatory. However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother.
Looking at my attractive friend, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the added weight of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself. That her own life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. She would give it up in a moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years—not to accomplish her own dreams—but to watch her children accomplish theirs.
I want to describe to my friend the exhilaration of seeing your child learn to hit a ball. I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog for the first time. I want her to taste the joy that is so real it hurts.
My friend's look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes. "You'll never regret it," I say finally. Then, squeezing my friend's hand, I offer a prayer for her and me and all of the mere mortal women who stumble their way into this holiest of callings.

Tactics for Job-hunt Success

If you're finding it tough to land a job,try expanding your job-hunting plan to include the following tactics:
Set your target. While you should always keep your options open to compromise, you should also be sure to target exactly what you want in a job.A specific job hunt will be more efficient than a haphazard one.
Schedule ample interviews.Use every possible method to get interviews——answering ads, using search firms, contacting companies directly, surfing the Web,and networking.Even if a job is not perfect for you, every interview can be approached as a positive experience.
Follow up.Even if someone does not hire you, write them a thank-you note for the interview. Then, some weeks later, send another brief letter to explain that you still have not found the perfect position and that you will be available to interview again if the original position you applied for——or any other position, for that matter——is open.Do this with every position you interview for,and you may just catch a break.
Make it your full-time job.You can't find a job by looking sporadically。You have to make time for it.If you're unemployed and looking, devote as much time as you would to a full-time job.If you have a job while you're looking, figure out an organized schedule to maximize your searching time.
Network vertically。In the research phase of your job hunt, talk to people who are on a level above you in your desired industry. They'll have some insights that people at your own level won't have, and will be in a good position to hire you or recommend you to be hired.Keep your spirits up.Looking for a job is one of the toughest things you will ever have to do.Maintain your confidence, stay persistent, and think positively, and eventually you will get a job that suits you.

The gift of Love

A lack of electricity

At present there is a heavy shortage of electricity all around the world. Maybe some night while you are doing something important, but suddenly the lights are off. What an indignant thing! Then, we could ask what has happened and why.
There are many reasons for lack of electricity in our world. I'll give two main ones. First of all, to make electricity needs plenty of natural sources, such as coal, water and wind. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer natural resources left because they are always limited but more and more people need it. It has become the basic factor for economical and social development. Secondly, many of us haven't paid enough attention and even still waste much of it. What a shame!
So, we should take quick and informed action to solve this problem. Of all measures, the below are the most important: We should develop more ways of making electricity such as nuclear energy, and form the good habit of efficiently making use of our limited but valuabe resources!

Great Event

Teacher: What great event happened in 1809? Little Willy: Abraham Lincoln was born. Teacher: Correct. And what great event happened in 1812? Little Willy: Abraham Lincoln had his third birthday.

St Peter's question

Three men, a doctor, an accountant and a lawyer are dead and they appear in front of St Peter. St Peter tells them that they have to answer one question in order to get to Heaven. He looks at the doctor and asks, "There was a movie that was made about a ship that sank after hitting an iceberg, what was its name?" The doctor answers, "The Titanic" and he is sent through. He then looks at the accountant and say, "How many people died in that ship?" Fortunately the accountant had just watched the movie and he answers, "1 500!". St Peter sends him through and then finally turns to the lawyer and commands, in a very heavy voice, "Name them!".

Goethe's Tolerance

Goethe's Tolerance
Goethe was once strolling on a narrow path in a park in Weimar. As luck would have it, he met with a critic who was hostile to him. Both of them stopped, staring at each other. Then the critic said, "I'll never make way for a fool." "But I will," with that Goethe retreated aside.

About Memory

Some people have very good memory and can easily learn quite long poems by heart. There are other people who can only remember things when they have repeated them again and again. The famous English writer, Charles Dickens said that he could walk down any long street in London and then tell you the name of every shop he had passed. Many of the great men of the world have wonderful memories. A good memory is a help in learning a foreign language. Everybody learns his own language by remembering what he hears when he was a small child, and some children----like boys and girls who live abroad with their parents----seem to learn two languages as easily as one. In school it is not so easy to learn a second language because the pupils have so little time for it, and they are very busy with other subjects as well. A man's mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photos not only of what we see but also what we feel, hear, smell and taste. When we take a real photo with a camera, there is much to do before the photo is finished and is readyfor us to show to our friends. In the same way there is much work to be done before we can keep a picture forever in our minds.
Memory is the diary we all carry about us. We keep things we have experienced in this diary.

Life Is a Struggle

Life is a struggle. I shall never forget the most striking part of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow' s poem -- A Psalm of Life: "In the world's blood field of battle, In the bivouac of life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife!"Ludwig van Beethoven was a typical "hero in the strife". He was not only one of the greatest composers, but also one of the most persevering men. As a deaf man, he went on working with his strong will in the last year of his life, though he was not able to hear his own fine and original music. Another example of persistence in struggle is Deng Yaping. She once said that her technique came from continuous training, emphasizing the importance of daily practice to a player.
As a student, I seem to be in a boat sailiug against the current. I must make an effort to forge ahead. A little carelessness will result in being driven back. Indeed, learning is a struggle against idleness and carelessness. Following the examples of Ludwig van Beethoven and Deng Yaping, I shall take great pains to urge myself on, moving steadily forward like a heroic boatman in the rough sea of knowledge.

Life is all about choices

Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I’d be twins!” He was a natural motivator.
If an employee was having a bad day, Michael was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Michael and asked him, "I don' t get it. You can' t be positive all the time. How do you do it?"
Michael replied, each morning I wake up and say to myself 'Mike, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.' I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life."
"Yeah, right. It isn't that easy." I protested.
"Yes it is, " Michael said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line is: It's your choice how you live life. " I reflected on what Michael said.
Soon thereafter, I left the big enterprise that I had worked in for years to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often though about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it. Several years later, I heard Michael was involved in a serious accident, falling off 60 feet from a communications tower.
After l8 hours of surgery, and weeks of intensive care, Michael was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back. I saw Michael about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I’d be twins. Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.
"The first thing that went through my mind was the well being of my soon-to-born daughter," Michael replied. "Then, as I lay on the ground, remembered I had two choices: I could choose to live or I could choose to die. I chose to live." "Weren’t you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked. Michael continued, "... the paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the operation room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, l read 'He's a dead man.' I knew I needed to take action." "What did you do?" I asked. "Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me” said Michael. "She asked me if I was allergic to anything. ‘Yes,’ I said. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled", ‘Gravity’” Over their laughter, I told them, 'I'm choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead'."
Michael lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I Learned from him that every day we have a choice to live fully. Attitude is everything.

Honesty

When it comes to honesty, quite a lot of people believe it is essential to a person’s character and success.
They base their idea on the following reasons: on one hand, successful business owes much to mutual trust; on another hand, great people in history such as Abraham Lincoln and Genete Washington set us good examples of being honest, they are great because they are honest.
But some people think differently. They believe honesty is becoming out of date. Their reasons run as following: to begin with, cheating on exams is becoming more and more popular; in addition, some singers and movie stars cheat on taxes; last but not the least, if you are not careful enough, you’ll buy some defective goods and fake products.
It is high time we emphasized and encouraged honesty. We can take effective measures to restore it. For example, kids should be taught to tell truth, strict rules and regulations should be carried out to stop cheatings on exams and taxes, etc.

Disasters

In the past hundred years, there have heen frequent natural disasters, such as floods, droughts, mud-rock flows, seismic sea waves, earthquakes, windstorms and the stretching of new deserts.
The disasters have killed millions upon millions of people, destroyed countless homes, and wiped out numerous pieces of fertile land.
Now more and more people become aware that those disasters have much to do with what we have done to the earth. We have cut down too many trees in the forests,we have badly polluted the environment, we have shocked our own home-planet time and again with tremendously powerful explosions of nuclear bombs.
As a result, climates have become abnormal, rainwater rushes down hillsides angrily, and the underground energy goes up to revenge itself on us.
The earth is our only home-planet. It is urgent for us to stop damaging it, and to do our best to protect it and make it a lovely place suitable to live in, for we have nowhere to go and survive except where we are now.

competition and cooperation

When it comes to competition and cooperation, some people always emphasize competition but neglect cooperation.
Their reasons run as following: to begin with, they believe only competition can help them defeat their counterparts; in addition, they think competition is the only way to lead to success.
But some others hold different opinion. They think cooperation is as important as competition. They base their opinion on the following reasons: on one hand, cooperation can build trust between each other and help to bring long-term relationship; on another hand, cooperation can turn a small and weak business into a big and strong one.
From what has been discussed above, we may safely draw a conclusion that both competition and cooperation are essential to success and thus should be emphasized at the same time.

say no to pirated products

At present, piracy is becoming unprecedentedly visible in China,Any product, like tape,CD and hi-tech device can be copied, not to mention book.Shortly after a newly-published book hits the shelves, people will unsurprisingly find its pirated counterparts in the stores.
It has been widely believed that piracy has caused a great loss to legitimate producers, inventors and authors in many ways.To start with, pirated products often cost much less than the original ones,so they enjoy unbeatable advantage in price in spite of their relatively poor quality.
The original ones,on the contrary, sell poorly. As far as pirated books are concerned, they do great harm to the authors/ reputation due to their misprints. In the long run, pirated products may also have negative impacts on customers since those legitimate producers' enthuslasm may be greatly hurt by the fact that some customers are more indined to purchase pirated products.
